The UAE’s state-owned energy company, Masdar, has agreed to enhance its renewable energy cooperation with Indonesia, following a meeting between Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, and Masdar’s CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, in Dubai.

The discussion focussed on ongoing collaborations, including the Cirata floating solar power plant, which is Southeast Asia’s largest of its kind, located in Purwakarta, West Java.

The Cirata project, developed in partnership with Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company PT PLN, became operational in November 2023, with a capacity of 192 MWp. The plant is expected to supply electricity to 50,000 households, marking a significant step toward Indonesia’s sustainable energy goals. Airlangga emphasised the project's importance, stating, "This cooperation shows Masdar's commitment to supporting the development of renewable energy in Indonesia."

Airlangga also revealed that discussions had begun regarding the expansion of the Cirata plant’s capacity. The existing 6,200-hectare reservoir could potentially accommodate an increase to over 1,000 MWp in future phases. Phase II development is already underway, following the signing of a Joint Development Study Agreement last year.

Additionally, Masdar is collaborating with PLN and Pertamina on a range of renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, geothermal, and green hydrogen. The companies are exploring opportunities for clean energy development in Indonesia’s upcoming Nusantara Capital City (IKN), with plans for a 200 MW renewable energy project expected to be completed soon.

Masdar's commitment to advancing renewable energy in Indonesia aligns with both countries' shared goal of sustainable development and clean energy transition.
