Oman plans to significantly expand renewable energy in its electricity mix, targeting a renewable share of 30 percent by 2030, 60–70 percent by 2040 and 90–100 percent by 2050.

The country’s renewable energy development began with the 50 MW Dhofar I wind farm, commissioned in southern Oman in 2019. This was followed by the 500 MW Ibri II solar project, which started operations in 2021.

In January 2025, Oman commissioned two solar power plants with a combined capacity of 1 GW in the Wilayat of Manah in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate.

The country is also preparing for a major expansion of renewable generation. Between 2027 and 2031, Oman plans to develop large scale solar and wind projects, along with waste to energy facilities, with their combined capacity potentially reaching 10.6 GW.

The planned expansion forms part of Oman’s broader strategy to increase the role of renewable energy in electricity generation and progressively reduce dependence on conventional power sources.
