Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is set to visit India in early July for the annual India-Japan Summit, which will be held in Assam, marking the first time the high-level bilateral meeting is being hosted in India's Northeast region.

The visit is expected to be accompanied by a large business delegation comprising more than 50 senior executives from leading Japanese companies, underscoring Tokyo's growing interest in expanding economic and strategic cooperation with India. Among the prominent industry leaders expected to join the delegation is Toshihiro Suzuki, President of Suzuki Motor Corporation.

Semiconductor manufacturing, industrial investments, supply-chain diversification, infrastructure development and technology collaboration are expected to feature prominently in discussions between the two countries. The summit comes at a time when India is actively seeking to strengthen its domestic semiconductor ecosystem and attract global investments in advanced manufacturing.

The choice of Assam as the venue highlights the increasing strategic significance of India's Northeast region in New Delhi's Act East policy. India and Japan have been working closely on connectivity, transport infrastructure and development projects across the region, which serves as a gateway to Southeast Asia.

The visit also coincides with growing efforts to position Northeast India as a hub for clean energy development. In this context, the REconnect Summit – Guwahati 2026, organised by 'Energietica India' and scheduled for June 25, will be held under the theme, 'Accelerating Northeast India's Clean Energy Transition Through Solar, Storage & Energy Access.' The summit will bring together policymakers, state nodal agencies, DISCOMs, developers, manufacturers, investors, financial institutions and technology providers to accelerate the region's clean energy transition. The summit will focus on rooftop solar deployment, rural electrification, clean energy infrastructure, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and energy access.

Discussions at the clean energy summit will cover scaling up the PM Surya Ghar initiative, expanding renewable energy access in remote and underserved communities, strengthening domestic solar manufacturing opportunities and enhancing grid reliability, resilience and energy security across the Northeastern states. The agenda aligns closely with broader efforts to attract investments and accelerate sustainable economic development in the region.

Reports indicate that the India-Japan Summit is expected to focus on fresh Japanese investments in manufacturing, electronics, clean energy, logistics and industrial infrastructure. Discussions are also likely to cover economic security, resilient supply chains and cooperation in critical technologies.

Japan remains one of India's largest development partners and foreign investors, with Japanese companies playing a significant role in sectors such as automobiles, transportation infrastructure, industrial corridors and urban development. The participation of a sizeable corporate delegation is expected to provide momentum to new business partnerships and investment proposals.

The summit is also expected to reaffirm the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, with both sides seeking deeper cooperation across trade, technology, infrastructure, regional connectivity and Indo-Pacific initiatives.

The hosting of the summit in Assam is being viewed as a significant diplomatic and economic milestone for the Northeast, reflecting efforts by both countries to accelerate the region's integration into regional and global economic networks while unlocking new opportunities for investment, clean energy deployment and sustainable development.
