OSM’s 7-Ton Electric Truck Offers 300 Km Daily Range
January 22, 2025. By Aishwarya
Que: Can you tell us what is Omega Seiki Mobility showcasing at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025?
Ans: We have participated in every auto show, and this time, we are showcasing our new 7-ton truck. Additionally, we are launching our 1-ton truck tomorrow. We have also introduced the new version of the Stream City Quick for passenger mobility.
Our display will feature a mix of trucks and passenger mobility solutions. We have been working on trucks for a long time, and this marks our entry into the LCV segment. Previously, we showcased trucks, but their pricing was high. We went back to the drawing board and are now introducing a competitively priced product. As for the 7-ton truck, it offers a 4,000 kg payload, a GVW of 7,000 kg, and a top speed of 70 km/h. The pricing is highly competitive, and this marks OSM’s entry into the LCV market.
Que: In the competitive EV market of India, how does OSM differentiate itself from competitors?
Ans: OSM has always been known for innovation, with new designs and rapid product development. We operate like Zara—just as they quickly release new clothing designs, we rapidly introduce new vehicle models. This strategy is similar to what China does as a leader in the EV industry. They launch new products faster than anyone else, and we follow the same approach.
We are constantly building our brand with innovative products and cutting-edge technology. Our battery technologies include fast charging, swapping, and ultra-fast 15-minute charging. We are the first to introduce a 7-ton truck with a 15-minute fast charge capability, providing a range of 150-160 km in just one charge. This enables a total range of 300 km in a single day, eliminating range anxiety. We are committed to transforming mobility in India.
Que: What investments is OSM making in R&D for electric trucks, and what strategies are in place to maintain your market position?
Ans: We have continually invested in R&D, which accounts for almost 40% of our annual expenditure. We collaborate with European, Korean, and Japanese partners. Recently, we secured investment from X-City Japan Corp, which is helping us develop new powertrains and battery technologies.
Additionally, we are preparing for an IPO in March, followed by another towards the end of the year. The funds raised will be used to expand our truck lineup, including the 1-ton, 3.5-ton, and 7-ton models, along with other commercial vehicles. Commercial vehicles contribute to 30% of pollution in India, and it is time to change that. However, affordability is key to adoption. In India, while there is a lot of talk about environmental concerns, businesses primarily focus on lowering total cost of ownership (TCO). OSM is actively working on making electric trucks cost-effective.
Que: How have government incentives and policies impacted the EV truck segment, and what further measures could accelerate growth in this sector?
Ans: Until recently, there were no incentives for electric trucks. Under the PM-EV Drive scheme, incentives have now been introduced for larger trucks, but not yet for the 1-ton category. However, we are committed to building EV trucks regardless of government incentives.
That being said, we believe the government should focus on providing better financing options for customers and developing a robust EV ecosystem. Incentive schemes should not just benefit large corporations but should be accessible to all. While government support is helpful, businesses should not rely entirely on incentives. A company that depends solely on government policies for its survival will not last. We appreciate the government's efforts but advocate for a more consistent and structured policy approach. Regardless of government policies, OSM is dedicated to making India greener and cleaner.
Que: How does OSM integrate sustainability into its business model, and what is your vision for shaping a greener transportation sector?
Ans: Sustainability is not just about producing greener trucks; it encompasses the entire ecosystem. This includes waste management, battery recycling, and sustainable energy use. Our factories are powered by solar energy, and we encourage our suppliers to adopt greener practices. If our supply chain partners do not adhere to sustainable standards, we will not work with them.
Building a sustainable future requires a holistic approach—it is not just about one company making green products, but about creating an entire ecosystem. OSM collaborates with multiple partners, including recyclers, logistics players, and suppliers, to ensure that our entire operation is environmentally responsible. Sustainability is at the core of our mission.
Que: Could you elaborate on OSM’s plans for global expansion, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, and how this aligns with your export strategies?
Ans: As we have previously stated that in the next five years, 40% of our sales will come from exports. We are working on something very significant in the United Arab Emirates. We are establishing a manufacturing facility in partnership with a strategic ally, which will serve as our gateway to Africa and the Middle East.
Beyond that, we are expanding into Asia, including Vietnam and Cambodia, as well as Latin America. We are currently testing our products in these markets to establish a strong foundation for future growth. Our approach is to think locally but act globally. We are confident that OSM’s products will be well-suited for markets in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, just as internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles have been widely adopted in these regions.
