I think it’s one of the best times to be starting a company in India as India is in a transition phase moving from analog to digital age, fossil fuel to renewable age, carbon-intensive to carbon-neutral age. I think that a government sufficiently acknowledges that and has been undertaking a lot of initiatives to uplift the startup community in India. But I think that the government must do a better job of communicating their startup policies and initiatives to those who need them the most.

In an exclusive interaction series with startup companies in the energy and mobility space, Manu Tayal, Associate Editor, Energetica India, interacted with Sachin Sengar, Founder & CEO of Lowsoot. Here’re the edited excerpts from that interaction:

Que: Tell Energetica India readers in brief about Lowsoot including its vision?

Ans: Lowsoot is a Bangalore-based Startup that aims to reverse climate change by helping businesses and individuals calculate and offset their footprint by funding/donating to green initiatives.

In the last 50 days, more than 15,000 people have calculated their carbon footprint on our platform.

Que: How do you help companies in reducing their carbon footprints?

Ans: We can explain it in three steps:

Audit: We first calculate the carbon footprint of a company with the help of our research team that does a very thorough analysis of all aspects of any business.

Reduce: After having a close look at the operations of any company, we identify low-hanging fixes that can lead to the maximum reduction in CO2 emissions.

Erase: Once we have reduced the CO2 emissions as much as possible, the remaining CO2 emissions can be offset via our verified green projects.

Que: Who are your target customers and industries?

Ans: Our target customers are all heavy industries that have operation-intensive businesses and heavily rely on logistics. We are actively working with logistics, oil, and petroleum, hospitality, and manufacturing companies. We also enable file net individuals who are climate-conscious to invest their money in green initiatives for a better tomorrow.

Que: Shed some light on your experiences across sectors, and how the idea of forming Lowsoot came into existence?

Ans: I am a traveler and I love nature. Also, I am very interested in how simple technology can be used to solve problems of massive scale. I worked in hospitality as head of marketing and technology for India’s largest backpacker hostel startup. As a part of their core team, I played a pivotal role in helping them grow.

While I was working there, I got stuck with the problem of electricity wastage that was happening on our property. I left my job and Co-founded a company that helps commercial properties reduce their electricity wastage by 40 per cent. This led to understanding climate change in depth. India’s biggest EV logistics player eBikeGo decided to back the idea of Lowsoot with a shared motivation to reverse climate change and help the world reach net neutrality by 2050.

Que: What kind of response you have seen in the industry towards carbon credits awareness?

Ans: I believe that the awareness of carbon credits especially in India is low but growing fast, especially due to the growing media coverages around this. Our main focus is on a large-scale awareness campaign to educate Businesses, NGOs, and farmers about the potential of working in this space.

Que: As an entrant what kind of challenges you have faced?

Ans: I think trust is the biggest problem that we need to optimize for.

Another challenge we are facing is ensuring that NGOs are delivering on the project properly on the ground.

Que: What are your views on government support for the start-up ecosystem in the country? Any suggestions?

Ans: I think it’s one of the best times to be starting a company in India as India is in a transition phase moving from analog to digital age, fossil fuel to renewable age, carbon-intensive to carbon-neutral age. I think that a government sufficiently acknowledges that and has been undertaking a lot of initiatives to uplift the startup community in India. But I think that the government must do a better job of communicating their startup policies and initiatives to those who need them the most.

Que: Kindly share details about Lowsoot’s investment and funding? Any new plans?

Ans: Lowsoot has been incubated by India’s biggest electric vehicle (EV) logistics company eBikeGo. We are actively receiving offers for impact investment and many strategic investors are looking to come on board. We are taking our time to take a call on this as we already have a decent runway.

Que: How a person can easily calculate and erase their carbon footprint on their own?

Ans: For anyone to erase their carbon footprint they first need to track their carbon footprint (You can’t improve what you can’t measure). Once the carbon footprint is calculated we know clearly what to do, we need to become carbon neutral or net-zero. The first step towards net-zero is to reduce your avoidable carbon emissions, with the help of technological or behavioral interventions. Once you have sufficiently reduced your personal carbon footprint, you can now fund green initiatives that suck carbon back out of the atmosphere like large-scale mangrove reforestation, direct air capture, etc.

Que: What are your future targets?

Ans: In the next 6 months, we are onboarding more than 10,000 NGOs and green projects on our platform. We are also building a 10,000 community of climate-conscious students, startup investors, research scientists, and activists. This community will be the breeding ground for rapid innovation and collaboration which is extreme.
