ThunderPlus Expands EV Charging Across India
October 24, 2024. By Abha Rustagi
Que: ThunderPlus has experienced noteworthy growth, establishing over 2,000 charging stations across 65 locations in India. What do you attribute this rapid expansion to?
Ans: Our growth is the result of a strategic, well-rounded approach that combines innovation, partnerships, and a deep understanding of India's unique EV landscape. We've positioned ourselves as a fully vertically integrated company, managing everything from manufacturing to operation. Staying ahead of the market needs cutting-edge technology, we’ve ensured our infrastructure supports all types of electric vehicles, be it two-wheelers, three-wheelers, or buses.
The approach that helped us stay ahead of the Market is the ‘Anchor Customer Approach’. Through this, we ensure that we anchor a customer first, generate and estimate the demand and then plan the charging station accordingly; with a scope to expand its capacity. This ensures that all our charging stations are either profitable or near profitability from day one thus making our expansion easier.
Another interesting factor that aided our success so far is our strategic partnerships, be it with the India Post, South Central Railways, Bharat Petroleum, TATA Motors and other Municipalities. These partnerships ensure the ample and immediate availability of land and power; when clubbed with the demand generation; these charging stations generate enough revenue from day one thus ensuring that all our partners are profitable.
Que: ThunderPlus has launched innovative products like Thunder Tej and Thunder Lite. Could you walk us through the unique features of these products and how they address specific needs within India’s diverse EV market?
Ans: Thunder Lite is a versatile, affordable EV charger designed for 2, 3, and 4-wheelers, making it suitable for residential and small commercial installations. What sets it apart is its ability to empower women in both rural and urban areas by offering an additional source of income through home-based charging. By expanding the availability of these chargers, our #The HarGharThunder campaign reduces range anxiety and fosters the rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), helping drive sustainable growth in the EV market. This is very similar to our STD booth business which used to generate passive income without any human intervention.
Thunder Tej, on the other hand, is an innovative DC fast charger developed specifically for 2 and 3-wheelers. For the first time in India, EV owners can quickly charge their vehicles during short breaks of just 15 minutes. This solution is ideal for public spaces like cafés, rest stops, and roadside tea stalls, where quick turnaround times are essential. Thunder Tej is set to revolutionize EV charging in public spaces, addressing the need for fast, efficient charging solutions in high-traffic locations.
Que: The #HarGharThunder and #ChaiPeCharge campaigns are incredibly exciting initiatives. How do you see these campaigns empowering local communities and contributing to the broader adoption of EVs in both rural and urban areas?
Ans: The #HarGharThunder and #ChaiPeCharge campaigns are designed to make EV charging more accessible and relatable to the everyday user. By embedding charging infrastructure into local communities, we're addressing one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: availability. These campaigns create a seamless, community-driven approach to charging by leveraging local businesses and encouraging grassroots-level participation. #ChaiPeCharge, for example, brings charging stations to roadside chai stalls, making EVs a convenient option for rural and semi-urban areas. We believe these campaigns will accelerate the adoption of EVs by making the infrastructure not just accessible but also familiar.
The problem we are trying to address is to remove the charge anxiety from the Indian EV ecosystem. Which means, EV charging points to be vividly and abundantly available across the cities and these campaigns are media to achieve the same.
Que: How do you see Thunder Tej (#ChaiPeCharge) influencing the growth of smaller EVs in the market, and what has the initial reception been like?
Ans: In the current market, fast charging solutions are available for 4 wheelers, but from our market research, what we realized is that the best used case for fast chagrin solutions are needed for 2 wheelers and 3 wheelers especially among the gig workers/ last mile delivery partners. Thus we innovated this product and promoting through #ChaiPeCharge campaign. The message here is that a gig worker can get his 2 wheeler charged to 80% within his chai break of 10 minutes and a three wheeler in 30 minutes.
Thunder Tej is specifically designed to meet the needs of India's growing two- and three-wheeler EV market. With its fast-charging capability, it offers a game-changing solution to smaller EVs that require quick turnaround times, especially for commercial use like delivery services and shared mobility. The initial response has been overwhelmingly positive. Fleet operators and individual EV owners have praised its efficiency, reliability, and ease of use. We believe Thunder Tej will play a critical role in encouraging the switch to smaller EVs, especially in urban areas where speed and convenience are essential.
Que: Range anxiety is a significant barrier to EV adoption. How are ThunderPlus' solutions, like the multi-vehicle fast charging stations and home-based chargers, helping to alleviate this issue?
Ans: Unlike the West, India as a market embraces smaller vehicles with shorter ranges. This is the only way through which we shall achieve mass adoption of electric vehicles making them affordable. Thus, the problem statement for the Indian market would be to remove charging anxiety rather than range anxiety.
Which means, fast chargers to be available within the cities, between the cities, on the highways, in public platforms and in every possible location to ensure that charging anxiety is completely removed from customers.
Thus, most of our solutions are tailored as a solution to this context.
For example, our “ThunderLite” / #HarGharThunder, exactly solves this problem; through this we make a universal charger that can charge 2w, 3w and 4 w available to the public at less than 99 USD. This particular charger is IP 67 protected, metal body built, with Industrial connector and completely safe. This charger is certified by ARAI making it the safest charger available in the market now.
This 3.3 KW AC charger at a price point of less than 99 USD, ensures enough returns are generated among small time business owners or residential societies thus having the ability to convert every wall, house, and society into a potential public charging station.
Que: ThunderPlus has partnered with some of the most prominent players. How do these partnerships align with your vision for EV infrastructure in India?
Ans: Our partnerships with industry leaders like TATA Motors, Bharat Petroleum, India Post, South Central Railways are strategic steps toward building a comprehensive EV infrastructure across the country. These collaborations help us deploy fast charging solutions at scale, ensuring that infrastructure is available where it’s needed most—on highways, in cities, and even at railway stations. By aligning with these key players, we are supporting India’s transition to electric mobility, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and contributing to the government's vision of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
