String Inverter Technologies will Lead Future Solar Biz in C&I as well as Utility Segments

Indian policy makers need to focus on Solar Rooftop Systems with storage options (i.e., Solar Hybrid systems), rather than the rooftop solar grid-connected system. If all state governments will give more importance to Solar Rooftop battery backup system that will mean solar storage solutions price will also reduce drastically similar to grid-connected solar rooftop systems, opined Balasubramanian T, Technical Pre sales – APAC, GoodWe, in an exclusive conversation with Manu Tayal, Associate Editor, Energetica India. Balasubramanian also discussed about his company’s latest product offerings, promising technologies, quality check parameters, R&D facilities, expectations etc. Here’re the edited excerpts from that interaction:

Que: Kindly tell Energetica India readers in brief about GoodWe and its latest product offerings for Indian customers?

Ans: GoodWe is a world-leading PV inverter and energy storage solutions manufacturer with an accumulative installation of 23 GW across the globe in more than 100+ countries. GoodWe solar inverters have been largely used in Residential, Commercial rooftops, Industrial and Utility-Scale Systems, ranging from 0.7kW to 250kW. GoodWe is also ranked as one of the Top 10 inverter suppliers by IHS Markit and has achieved 6 consecutive TÜV Rheinland ‘All Quality Matters’ Awards. From 2020 onwards, GoodWe is listed as a Public Limited Company on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

GoodWe inverters’ Residential solutions range from 0.7 to 15 kW, Commercial and Industrial (C&I) segment range from 17 to 136 kW. GoodWe HT 1500V Series (GW250K HT) is GoodWe’s top inverter for utilization in solar utilities with an extensive list of features designed to reduce Balance of System (BOS) and O&M costs. GoodWe offers PV+ Storage (Hybrid) solutions inverters ranging from 3kW to 50kW for Residential, Commercial and Industrial markets. In the second quarter of 2022, GoodWe is planning to launch a 300kW+ inverter in utility-scale solar markets and 100kW+ commercial energy storage products from 2020 onwards.


Que: In your view, which inverter technologies will lead in the near future?

Ans: In my view, obviously string inverter technologies will lead the future solar business in Commercial & Industrial segments as well as utility-scale solar power plants. Because string inverters will be more helpful for identifying mismatch and degradation losses in solar modules in the most effective manner, especially when modules start failing and derating. Also, string inverter technology is very strong in terms of technology and we can see that for the majority of utility-scale solar projects string inverters will offer a lower LCOE compared to central inverters. The reason behind lower LCOE is inverter solar plant downtime will reduce significantly and harvest more yield during the system lifetime.


Que: Indian market is considered as one of the most competitive markets globally, how do you deal with the cost dynamics while maintaining quality?

Ans: Even though the Indian solar market is very competitive, GoodWe will never compromise on quality. GoodWe uses only the most reliable and prominent raw material components and 90 per cent of the raw materials come from World’s Top 500 companies because we know small components also matter for us. We are continuously striving to improve the quality of our management system that enables GoodWe to produce safe and defect-free products and to ensure that the delivery and performance of the product will meet the customer requirements.


Que: Kindly shed some light on GoodWe’s manufacturing and R&D facility, and various quality check parameters performed on the products before finally delivered to customers?

Ans: There are two production facilities in China, located at Suzhou and Guandge. Every single inverter is tested on GoodWe self-developed ATS test platform to make sure inverters are 100 per cent ready before delivery. After each inverter is assembled, we will simulate the normal work status in the aging room with 45oC for at least 8 hours, in order to make sure they are reliable for performing in the hot weather. Technological innovation is GoodWe’s main core competence. With more than 500 employees in two R&D centers, GoodWe offers a comprehensive portfolio of products and solutions for Residential, Commercial and Utility scale PV systems, ensuring the best performance and quality of GoodWe’s entire product range.


Que: What are your expectations from the Indian policymakers?
