Accelerating India's Net Zero Goals: AVEVA’s Smart Solutions
February 26, 2025. By Abha Rustagi

Que: How is AVEVA supporting India's manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure sectors in their digital transformation journeys?
Ans: These are currently the sunrise sectors in India. The companies within these industries are in growth mode, driven by various government initiatives such as Make in India, Atma Nirbhar Bharat, the Smart Cities Initiative, and Production Linked Incentives (PLI).
These initiatives encourage rapid growth while ensuring sustainability for the future. At AVEVA, we take this responsibility seriously. Our software is designed to help customers track their carbon footprint, monitor energy utilisation, and explore ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
We enable our customers to measure their energy consumption, carbon footprint, and sustainability metrics. Our tools then help them identify key areas to focus on to improve their operations and enhance efficiency.
Que: How is AVEVA contributing to India's net zero emissions goal for 2070?
Ans: As part of India's commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2070, there is a strong emphasis on reducing emissions and increasing the share of renewable energy, including wind, solar, and green hydrogen. Many of our customers in the energy sector have launched specific initiatives to lower their carbon footprint, and we are collaborating with them to shift towards more sustainable energy sources.
For example, green hydrogen production relies on renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, which are inherently unpredictable. Our technology employs artificial intelligence and machine learning to simulate what we call the levelised cost of hydrogen.
When there is a drop in wind or solar energy availability, we recommend energy storage solutions, such as batteries and carbon capture and utilisation, to ensure a consistent supply of energy for electrolysers. This is one of the ways in which we support our customers in their journey towards net zero by 2070.
Que: Could you elaborate on AVEVA's collaboration with the Green Software Foundation to minimise carbon emissions through software solutions?
Ans: This is an emerging and highly significant topic. Traditionally, the energy consumption of software has not been tracked—neither the energy required to develop the software nor the energy expended when companies use it. Through our partnership with the Green Software Foundation, we are now addressing both aspects.
We have developed benchmarks to measure the energy cost of creating and utilising software. Across industries such as energy, manufacturing, power, oil and gas, and chemicals, we can now analyse how efficiently our customers use our software and compare their performance with global best practices.
With access to specific data provided by our customers in a controlled format, we can track the energy footprint of software usage. This partnership enables us to make our software development lifecycle more sustainable and helps customers reduce their energy consumption.
Que: Can you brief us on the recent MoU announcement with HMEL?
Ans: HMEL is one of our key customers, and we have maintained a strong relationship with them for over a decade. They are pioneers in adopting advanced and futuristic approaches to plant operations.
HMEL operates a crude oil refinery, a dual-feed naphtha cracker, as well as polyethylene and polypropylene plants. We are proud to have our software integrated into all their facilities. As they expand and diversify across industries, we are exploring ways to enhance our software’s role in their operations.
Our software solutions at HMEL cover everything from plant design to operational efficiency and energy management. Through this MoU, we are deepening our technology collaboration, incorporating artificial intelligence and machine learning innovations into their operations.
Additionally, we are in discussions to establish a Centre of Excellence focused on key operational areas such as efficiency improvement, supply chain management, and real-time data tracking. This collaboration will also support the development of a world-class refinery command and control centre, combining HMEL’s operational expertise with AVEVA’s cutting-edge software innovations.
Que: How does the AVEVA Sustainability Accelerator Programme advance green solutions and capabilities for industries?
Ans: Industries such as oil and gas, chemicals, and refineries have traditionally relied on established processes for decades. Many senior executives in these industries have between 30 to 50 years of experience in conventional methods.
The Sustainability Accelerator Programme is designed to accelerate the adoption of our software, helping companies explore new operational methods and maximise the value of our solutions in a shorter timeframe. This enables them to achieve their net zero goals more efficiently and effectively.
Que: Are there any upcoming partnerships or expansion plans?
Ans: Yes, we have partnerships at multiple levels. We collaborate with major cloud service providers such as Microsoft Azure and Amazon AWS, as well as data intelligence platforms like Databricks.
We also work closely with global system integrators, including Accenture, Capgemini, and Ernst & Young. These partnerships help integrate our solutions into various industries.
Furthermore, our channel partnerships are essential in expanding our reach across India's vast and diverse market, including Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. These partners help communicate the value of our software and support businesses in optimising their operations.
Que: How has your experience been at IEW, and how do events like this contribute to India's energy sector?
Ans: Our experience at IEW has been fantastic. The event brings together a diverse range of companies, including major national oil companies such as IOCL, ONGC, BPCL, and HPCL, as well as private sector giants like Reliance, Jio BP, Nayara Energy, and Essar. Additionally, the event features service providers such as EIL, Toyo, Technimont, and Halliburton, representing the entire energy ecosystem.
One of the highlights of IEW is the messaging from these companies, which emphasises how they impact consumers’ lives. For example, Jio BP showcased how its fuel enhances engine performance by displaying a Lexus car at their stall. EIL, on the other hand, highlighted its Waste to Energy programme, which converts organic waste into usable energy.
At AVEVA, we are proud that our technology plays a key role in designing and optimising such sustainable projects. The participation and engagement at this event underscore the importance of innovation in driving India’s energy sector forward.
