Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), the subordinate of the state-owned ZESA Holdings, has begun buying additional solar power from households and businesses.
The net metering invoicing system has smoothened individuals and businesses who have power-accelerated solar systems to put on sale their surplus solar power to ZETDC.
Consumers producing solar power with grid-tied inverters and smart meters can apply for the net metering facility by contacting any nearest ZETDC customer service centre. The acclaim units not only aid the user to acquire solar energy when they are in require but also hold customers in a low tariff band, thus reducing their monthly electricity costs.
The 117 connections that have been selected for the provisions opted from 175 successful implementations. The rest of the applications are still in progress.
As per Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), the linked installed potential is 4.9 MW, whereas the aggregate capacity for all applicants received is around 12.5 MW.
George Manyaya, General Manager – Stakeholder Relations Communications and Welfare Manager at ZESA, discussed the smart meter can calculate both the power delivered to the grid along with the power used by the consumer. The consumer attains their corresponding power units attributed to their ZEDTC account. This put together the electricity expenses cheaper whether it is prepaid or pays a post-paid bill.
The action of ZESA stimulates sustainable renewable energy sources, small-scale outlays, and energy market growth. It concedes importing substitution of energy and conserves insufficient foreign currency reserves through roof-top solar electricity.
