The World Biogas Association (WBA) is gearing up for the 'World Biogas Association INDIA Congress 2024', scheduled to take place on '23rd and 24th October' at Le Méridien, New Delhi.

Following the success of its inaugural event in 2023, the Congress aims to accelerate the growth of the biogas sector in India by focusing on decarbonisation, energy security, and climate action. As per the WBA, its mission is to accelerate global biogas development, contributing to climate goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 11 percent and creating up to 15 million new jobs globally.

As India cements its role in the global energy transition, the 2024 Congress will play a pivotal role in India's vision of establishing 5,000 large-scale compressed biogas (CBG) plants by 2030.. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA)’s 'Renewables 24' report, India’s CBG market is set to grow by 88 percent by 2030, with the potential for even higher growth—up to 150 percent—if stronger policy support is implemented. This year’s Congress will bring together government officials, industry leaders, and international experts to explore policies, technological innovations, and investment opportunities aimed at propelling the sector forward.

Key themes of the event will include strategies for reducing air and water pollution, fulfilling India’s climate commitments, and bolstering energy security by reducing reliance on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG). Discussions will revolve around how India can use biogas to meet its growing energy needs while also mitigating environmental challenges.

Prominent speakers and dignitaries will attend the Congress, reflecting the government’s commitment to biogas as a central component of its sustainable development strategy. Notable attendees include Tarun Kapoor, Advisor to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO);  Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa and former CEO of NITI Aayog;  Pankaj Jain, IAS, Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas; and P.K. Singh, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Their participation underscores the significance of biogas in the nation’s efforts to meet its renewable energy goals.

In recent months, the World Biogas Association (WBA) has been focused on its flagship #MakingBiogasHappen Programme, which includes the development of a 'Global Biogas Regulatory Framework' and the 'nternational Anaerobic Digestion Certification Scheme (ADCS)'. These initiatives aim to standardize regulations and certification practices worldwide, which will in turn drive significant growth in the global biogas sector. The WBA sees these efforts as critical to unlocking the full potential of biogas technology, both in India and globally.

Charlotte Morton OBE, Chief Executive of the World Biogas Association, expressed enthusiasm about the event and its timing, stating, “The '2nd World Biogas Association INDIA Congress' comes at a crucial moment for India’s biogas industry. With the market projected to grow from USD 1.47 billion in 2022 to USD 2.25 billion by 2029, the opportunities are enormous. This Congress will be a key platform to bring together policymakers, industry leaders, and investors to accelerate this growth and help India unlock the full potential of biogas in its sustainable energy future.”

The Congress will provide a space for key stakeholders to explore the deployment of anaerobic digestion and biogas technologies in India, as part of the broader green energy transition. With India positioning itself as a global leader in biogas production, the event will highlight how the nation can contribute to global climate change mitigation and promote sustainable development.
