EDP Renewables North America LLC and Walmart have inked a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for a portion of a 180 MWac solar project in Texas.

The agreement solidifies Walmart as a key off-taker for 162 MWac of renewable energy, advancing its commitment to sustainability and clean energy initiatives.

The newly established utility-scale project is set to energize more than 27,000 households in Texas annually, strengthening the Lone Star state's renewable energy portfolio. Beyond its environmental impact, the project is poised to deliver substantial economic benefits, including millions of dollars in payments to landowners and an estimated USD 42 million in additional contributions to local governments over its operational lifetime.

Notably, the project has already begun its community engagement efforts by donating USD 10,000 to a local school district near its site. In addition to its economic contributions, the project is expected to create approximately 300 full-time equivalent jobs during its construction phase, with three permanent operations positions thereafter.

This collaboration builds upon Walmart's portfolio of renewable energy projects, which spans over 600 initiatives across more than 10 countries. To integrate up to 10 GW of clean energy projects by 2030, Walmart remains firm in its mission to promote sustainability and reduce its overall carbon footprint.

Frank Palladino, VP of Renewable Energy Strategy at Walmart, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting its alignment with Walmart's broader clean energy objectives. Similarly, Sandhya Ganapathy, CEO of EDP Renewables North America, lauded Walmart's leadership in environmental stewardship and said, “EDPR NA is proud to partner with Walmart to help serve its purpose of helping people save money and live better, which is well aligned with ours, to save families money and improve quality of life for the communities we serve, all while reducing our overall carbon footprint.”

Since 2018, Walmart has collaborated with EDPR NA on various renewable energy ventures, including utility-scale and distributed generation projects. Currently, Walmart serves as an off-taker for EDPR NA's Bright Stalk and Harvest Ridge Wind Farms in Illinois, along with the Headwaters II Wind Farm in Indiana. With the latest agreement, the cumulative utility-scale PPA procurement between the two companies totals 395 MW, equivalent to powering over 68,000 homes.
