After years of deliberation, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has put forth a concrete proposal to introduce electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the city.
VMC is now in talks with Adani Total Energies E-Mobility Ltd (ATEL) to establish these charging facilities. The city had initially discussed promoting EV usage in 2020, but concrete projects were not initiated.
In the budget for 2022-23, VMC proposed charging stations for the first time, with plans for four such facilities. However, they were not implemented despite government emphasis on green mobility. The 2023-24 budget reiterated the commitment to charging stations and announced the formulation of an EV policy for the city.
ATEL recently submitted a proposal to set up 20 EV charging stations in Vadodara. The proposal suggests a 10-year operation agreement, with VMC receiving INR 1.5 per unit for the first six years and INR 2 per unit after that.
The city will also benefit from 25 percent of the carbon credits generated and 40 percent of revenue from digital advertising boards at the charging stations. In exchange, VMC will provide space for the stations, considering locations like flyovers, gardens, auditoriums, community halls, and ponds.
The proposal will be discussed by the standing committee, and if approved, VMC will enter into an agreement with ATEL for the project.
