Uttar Pradesh Targets 22,000 MW Solar Power by 2027

Uttar Pradesh has set an ambitious target of generating over 22,000 megawatts (MW) of solar power by 2027 as part of its Solar Energy Policy 2022, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced during a recent joint review meeting with Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Prahlad Joshi.

To bridge the gap, the state government is rolling out a comprehensive plan that includes solarisation of agricultural feeders and private on-grid pumps, installation of solar plants along expressways and railway lines, and local manufacturing of solar equipment. The transmission infrastructure is also being upgraded to accommodate the planned increase in capacity.

The Chief Minister highlighted the growing interest in the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, under which more than 10 lakh households have applied and over 1 lakh rooftop installations have already been completed. He directed UPNEDA to accelerate the connection process through a coordinated, statewide campaign. In order to meet the ambitious target, monthly rooftop solar installations need to double from the current 11,000 to over 22,000 during FY 2025–26.

District-wise, DISCOM-wise, and municipal-level targets are being defined to ensure balanced rollout. Officials were instructed to prepare vendor lists and increase vendor numbers as per demand. Reviewing the PM-KUSUM scheme, the CM noted that UP leads in solarisation of private agricultural pumps and stressed mission-mode implementation, especially for converting grid-connected tube wells.

The government is also providing free solar panels to families in Vantangiya villages and tribal communities in Sonbhadra, Mirzapur, Chitrakoot, and Chandauli. All 17 municipal corporations have been asked to identify land for solar park development and connect urban streetlights to solar energy systems.

Union Minister Joshi lauded UP’s performance under both PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM schemes, stating that the state’s initiatives offer a scalable model for other regions. “With targeted campaigns and strong groundwork, Uttar Pradesh is on track to meet its growing energy demands,” he said.
