The Uttar Pradesh government is set to roll out a high-voltage campaign to install solar rooftops on 25,000 households in Varanasi within a span of two months.
This project, initiated at the behest of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), aims to promote green and sustainable energy practices in the city.
The central and state governments are expected to provide substantial subsidies, amounting to INR 150 crore and INR 75 crore, respectively, to facilitate the purchase of solar panels by the 25,000 households targeted in the campaign.
Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) has devised a multi-pronged strategy to achieve the goal.
The solar rooftop on-grid system, highly subsidized by the government, involves the installation of solar panels on building rooftops to convert sunlight into electricity. Excess electricity generated is sent back to the grid, and users are compensated for this surplus power through adjustments in their power bills.
The target of installing solar rooftops in 25,000 households will be achieved by solarizing approximately 250 houses in each of the 100 wards in the city, utilizing geospatial technology.
The success of the Varanasi campaign may pave the way for similar initiatives in other cities in the future, highlighting the government's commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions.
