Uruguay's state oil company Ancap declared a feasibility study for a new USD 4 billion green hydrogen project, part of a wider government plan to generate low-cost renewable energy.
The proposed green hydrogen and e-fuel amenity would initially be intended for trucks used in the forestry sector.
Green hydrogen is produced utilising renewable energy to segregate water by electrolysis, without generating greenhouse gases.
Uruguay will work alongside HIF Global, supported by German car manufacturer Porsche is producing fuel amenities in Chile, Australia and the United States.
The work will be commissioned in 2024 and will need an outlay of around USD 2 billion for green hydrogen and synthetic gasoline production, plus an additional USD 2 billion to establish wind farm turbines to power the plant.
Over the past decade, Uruguay has dramatically transitioned its energy matrix to renewable sources, placing it at the forefront of clean power in the region.
Energy companies are increasingly eyeing green hydrogen investments in Latin America as a way to help fight climate change.
The project is scheduled to commission in 2024 and will need an important investment of around USD 2 billion for the production of green hydrogen and synthetic gasoline. This all-inclusive approach that the whole process, from energy production to fuel production, remains eco-friendly in line with Uruguay’s commitment to renewable energy.
