To promote solar energy in Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi government is set to transform the Bundelkhand Expressway into the state's first solar expressway. Under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the government aims to establish solar power plants along the expressway, targeting a generation capacity of 550 MW.
The initiative has identified 1700 hectares of land along the Bundelkhand Expressway for solar power plants. With companies expressing interest, the project has the potential to illuminate one lakh houses connected to the expressway daily, once completed. The expected lifespan of the project is 25 years, with a payback period set at 10 to 12 years.
The Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) is actively shaping the project, having completed the Due Diligence Study and Expression of Interest (EOI) stage in August 2023. Currently, the Request for Proposal (RFP) to select developers is in the finalization stage, with the bidding process anticipated to commence soon.
In October 2023, eight leading solar power developers, including Tusco Ltd., Torrent Power Ltd., Somaya Solar Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Avaada Energy Ltd., and others, presented their proposals.
The completion of the Bundelkhand Expressway solar project is expected to address energy needs, laying the foundation for future e-mobility and development along the expressway.
The initiative holds significant financial benefits for UPEIDA. The authority has the potential to earn four crore through lease rent and an annual profit of INR 50 crore from the sale of generated energy.
Installing solar plants on multiple expressways, including Bundelkhand, Purvanchal, Agra-Lucknow, and Gorakhpur, could bring an additional annual benefit of INR 6 crore to UPEIDA in terms of energy consumption.
The Bundelkhand Expressway, spanning 296 km with four lanes, is divided into a main carriageway and a service lane. The vacant strip of land between these lanes, approximately 15 to 20 meters wide, will be covered with solar panels.
