Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Pushes for Shift of Agricultural Power Load to Solar Energy in UP
Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, reviewed Uttar Pradesh's power sector in Lucknow, emphasising prepaid meters for government consumers and a shift to solar for agricultural power.

Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, recently conducted a review of Uttar Pradesh’s power sector in Lucknow. He emphasised on the need for adoption of prepaid meters for government consumers and transitioning agricultural power load to solar energy.
The meeting was attended by Uttar Pradesh’s Energy and Urban Development Minister Arvind Kumar Sharma, Minister of State for Urban Development Rakesh Rathore, and other senior officials, and addressed challenges in power generation and the progress of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).
Lal advised that prepaid meters for government consumers should be prioritised by March 2025 and suggested a 5 percent rebate for prepaid users. He also urged timely execution of distribution projects in Noida, Varanasi, and Kanpur to enhance electricity access and reliability.
The minister recommended a resource adequacy plan to meet rising demand and proposed a joint meeting with the Department of Atomic Energy to discuss nuclear power project possibilities in Uttar Pradesh. He emphasised best practices in transmission operations and urged effective implementation of consumer rights under the Electricity Rules, including compensation for service shortcomings.
During the review meeting, Uttar Pradesh officials highlighted ongoing initiatives to ensure a reliable power supply and strengthen the financial health of distribution companies. Lal assured the state of the central government’s ongoing support for power and urban development efforts to improve services and quality of life for residents.
