Union government has appointed Santosh Kumar Sarangi as the new Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). He is a 1994 batch IAS officer of Odisha cadre. Prior to this, he was serving as Director General of Foreign Trade in the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

He was one among 18 senior IAS officers whom the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed and reassigned to Secretary and equivalent-level positions across various ministries and departments. This major reshuffle aims to enhance administrative efficiency and streamline governance mechanisms across sectors.

Sarangi holds a degree in Master of Arts (Political Science) from Delhi University and a Master in Public Policy from Duke University, USA.
During his tenure as DG of Foreign Trade, Sarangi spearheaded several key reforms to enhance India’s foreign trade and simplify export-import procedures. His deep expertise in policy formulation and execution is expected to serve him well in his new role as the Secretary of the MNRE.

Sarangi succeeds Nidhi Khare who was assigned an additional charge as the new Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), besides serving as the Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution. She was given the additional charge as Prashant Kumar Singh, who was appointed as the Secretary of MNRE in October 2024, was repatriated to Manipur to serve as Chief Secretary at the request of the state government.

As MNRE leads India’s clean energy transition – with a strong emphasis on solar, wind, and hydropower, Sarangi’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment in the country’s push for energy security and climate action.
