Trina Solar, a Chinese firm providing photovoltaic (PV) modules and smart energy solutions, has announced a remarkable achievement in solar energy efficiency.
As per the firm's statement, the company’s high-efficiency n-type solar total passivation (TOPAS) heterojunction (HJT) PV modules have reached an unprecedented aperture module efficiency of 25.44 percent. This milestone, independently verified by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) Calibration Laboratory (CalLab) in Freiburg, Germany, establishes a new global benchmark for large-area HJT PV modules. It also sets a world record for silicon-based PV modules featuring crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells with front and back contact structures.
It further added that the technological innovation behind this record-breaking module lies in Trina Solar’s advanced n-type TOPAS HJT solar cells. These cells incorporate a large-area n-type phosphorus-doped Czochralski silicon (Cz-Si) wafer measuring 210×105 mm², a proprietary development by Trina Solar. Key advancements include optimised thin-film passivation and fully passivated contact structures, which significantly reduce energy loss. Additionally, the module integrates a progressive variable-frequency RF p-type emitter, advanced light-trapping techniques, ultra-high-density packaging, and ultra-low-resistance interconnection, all of which contribute to its superior optical and electrical performance.
This accomplishment builds on a series of record-breaking achievements by Trina Solar over the past year, said the firm. It further noted that in October and November 2024, the company set global records for n-type Cz-Si tunnelling oxide passivated contacts (TOPCon) solar cell efficiencies, achieving 25.9 percent and 26.58 percent, respectively. In December, Trina Solar broke another record with its n-type Cz-Si HJT solar cell, achieving a remarkable efficiency of 27.08 percent. The new module efficiency record further solidifies Trina Solar’s leadership in advanced silicon PV technology and demonstrates the immense potential of TOPAS technology for future solar energy applications.
Gao Jifan, Chairman and CEO of Trina Solar, expressed pride in this achievement, stating, “This sets a new world record for large-area single-junction c-Si solar PV modules. It demonstrates the strong technical potential of TOPAS cells and reinforces the technology advantage for Trina Solar as a PV leader.”
The significance of this breakthrough extends beyond the laboratory. By exceeding a 25.4 percent front-side efficiency in large-area PV modules, Trina Solar underscores the growing potential of heterojunction technology (HJT) and advanced passivated contact structures. These advancements are poised to drive the solar industry toward more sustainable and efficient energy solutions, paving the way for widespread adoption of high-efficiency solar modules in both residential and industrial applications.
