Torrent Power Signs New MoU with Maharashtra

Torrent Power Ltd. revises its MoU with Maharashtra’s Department of Water Resources, updating the planned Pumped Storage projects capacity to 5,600 MW from the initial 5,700 MW.

Torrent Power Ltd. has updated its agreement with the Government of Maharashtra by signing a revised Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Water Resources. The new MoU, which updates a previous agreement from June 6, 2023, now focuses on establishing Pumped Storage projects with a total capacity of 5,600 MW, instead of the initially planned 5,700 MW.

As per the earlier MoU signed with the Department of Energy, Government of Maharashtra, in June 2023, Torrent Power was responsible for constructing three Pumped Storage Hydro Projects in Maharashtra. The estimated cost of the project was estimated be around INR 270 billion. With the  total capacity of 5,700 MW, the three project sites were located in Karjat (3,000 MW) in Raigarh District, Maval (1,200 MW), and Junnar (1,500 MW) in Pune District. These sites ares said to be off-stream and designed to provide a minimum of six hours of energy storage on a daily basis,  

It may be said that the revised MoU highlights Torrent Power’s commitment to advancing significant energy storage solutions, crucial for enhancing grid stability and supporting Maharashtra’s energy infrastructure.
