Thailand in Discussion with CATL and Others on Potential Battery Plants

Thailand is in discussion with China’s CATL and other battery manufacturers to construct production amenities in Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy that has also further plan to become a regional EV production hub.

Thailand government is discussing to many companies, not only CATL but many companies in the battery industry.

CATL or Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd. is the world’s leading battery supplier with a 37% market contribution, presently has no manufacturing amenities in Southeast Asia.

There are several companies is in the line of exploration of potential cooperation and development opportunities in battery-related business in the area.

By the year 2030, Thailand targets to transform about 30% of its yearly production of 2.5 million vehicles into EVs.

Though Thailand wants to captivate EV suppliers along with assembly plants, comprising local manufacturing of batteries and other major parts and components, like chargers.

On the upper hand, Thailand is supporting for investments that will finance plants with a capacity of over 8 gigawatt hours (GWh).

In the present scenario, CATL has 13 battery production hubs, 11 in China, one in Hungary and one in Germany.

CATL, which has been evolving rapidly outside China, has made contracts with Ford Motor, Honda Motor Co and BMW, and so on.
