The Tata Group inked an outline pact with the Gujarat government on constructing a lithium-ion cell factory with an investment of around INR 13,000 crore (USD 1.6 billion).

This step is for India is seeming to produce its own electric vehicle (EV) supply chain.

As per the official statement, the decision to establish the EV battery plant at Sanand, Gujarat.

A joint statement on the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Tata’s unit Agratas Energy Storage Solutions and the Gujarat government stated that operating the plant was anticipated to commence in less than three years.

The initial manufacturing capacity would be 20 GWh, which could be twice in the second phase of expansion.

Since the state government promises an objective to minimise carbon emissions by rising the production of electric vehicles, dependence on lithium-ion batteries will also increase crucially as EV usage increases.

The official stated, “This project will help in establishing a lithium-ion cell manufacturing ecosystem in the state”.

The plan is to lay another battery plant from the Tata stable that could either place in the UK or in another European location. The exact location is not yet finalised.
