Tamil Nadu Government Approves Bifurcation of Tangedco

Tangedco will be divided into two entities - the Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (TNPGC) and the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd. (TNPDC).

The State government of Tamil Nadu has given the green light to the bifurcation of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco). The approved proposal involves the creation of distinct entities for power generation and distribution, alongside the establishment of a dedicated green energy corporation.

According to the government order, Tangedco will be divided into two entities - the Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (TNPGC) and the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd. (TNPDC). The TNPGC will oversee fossil fuel-based thermal power plants, including both existing and under-construction facilities. Meanwhile, the TNPDC will handle the distribution of electricity across the state, encompassing power procurement, metering, billing, and customer support.

In a bid to accelerate the state's energy transition plans and gain access to green funds, the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGEC) is set to emerge through the integration of Tangedco's renewable energy division with the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Authority (TEDA). This newly established entity will be responsible for owning, operating, and maintaining all current and upcoming assets related to hydro generation, pumped hydro, and other clean and renewable energy projects.

While Tangedco will continue to operate until the formation of the generation and distribution companies, the new entities are anticipated to be established within this financial year. All three companies will be wholly owned subsidiaries of TNEB Ltd.

The government emphasizes that the power sector is undergoing a paradigm shift with disruptions across the value chain, primarily focusing on the transition to clean energy.
