Swift Current Energy has announced that the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has awarded its Mineral Basin Solar project a 20-year power contract.
The Mineral Basin Solar project, a 402 MWac initiative located on coal mine sites in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, is now the largest solar facility in the state and one of the largest in the United States, situated on former mine land.
The project's recognition as part of NYSERDA's competitive solicitation positions it as a game-changer in the energy landscape, showcasing a groundbreaking opportunity to repurpose former coalfields for the new energy economy.
US Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) praised the initiative, stating, "This project is an important step in demonstrating that Clearfield County and our rural communities will help light the way to our Nation's economic future."
Eric Lammers, Co-founder, and CEO of Swift Current Energy expressed the significance of the Mineral Basin Solar project in the context of the community's history in coal mining, stating, "The development, construction, and operation of the Mineral Basin Solar project will continue the community's leadership in energy production and show how former mine sites can be innovatively repurposed at scale for a new and restorative purpose in the nation's energy landscape."
The construction phase of Mineral Basin Solar is expected to create more than 450 direct full-time construction jobs, contributing millions of dollars to the community through tax revenue and direct community benefits programs.
The project's environmental impact is noteworthy, with greenhouse gas emissions avoided equivalent to removing 110,000 gas-powered cars from the road each year.
Swift Current has established partnerships with educational and development entities to create renewable energy workforce training opportunities. The project aims to benefit communities served by the Southern Tier West Regional Planning and Development Board in Western New York.
Swift Current's broader plan includes the development of over 1,000 MW of solar and storage capacity on reclaimed coal mines throughout Pennsylvania.
