In a significant shift towards sustainable transportation, electric cars accounted for nearly half of all new passenger car registrations in the European Union between January and November 2023, according to data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).
The data revealed that electrified vehicles, including fully electric models, plug-in hybrids, and full hybrids, constituted 47.6 percent of all new passenger car registrations in the EU by November. This marks a notable increase from the 43 percent recorded during the same period last year.
November alone saw a pivotal moment as electric car registrations crossed the halfway mark, underscoring the accelerating adoption of environmentally friendly vehicles. The overall new-car registrations in the EU increased by 6.7 percent in November, marking the 16th consecutive month of growth. Specifically, the registration of electric vehicles experienced a remarkable year-on-year rise of 13.3 percent.
Petrol car registrations showed a growth of 4.2 percent, while diesel registrations experienced a significant decline of 10.3 percent, reflecting the evolving consumer preferences and a broader industry transition towards cleaner alternatives.
The data further revealed a surge in registrations of fully electric cars, which rose by 16.4 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 144,378 vehicles. Despite a 22.5 percent decrease in registrations in Germany, the largest electric vehicle market in Europe, the overall trend indicated a positive trajectory for electric vehicles.
Hybrid-electric vehicles continued to be a popular choice among consumers, witnessing a year-on-year surge of 28.7 percent. In contrast, demand for plug-in hybrids experienced a decline of 22.1 percent.
Notably, registrations of hybrid-electric cars in key European countries, including Germany, France, and Italy, exceeded 1.5 million vehicles year-to-date out of a total of almost 2.5 million vehicles registered in the EU.
This data reinforces the growing momentum of the electric vehicle market in the European Union, signaling a transformative shift towards sustainable and eco-friendly mobility solutions.
