SunEdison completes first phase of innovative solar deployment over the Narmada Canal

SunEdison, a leading worldwide solar energy services provider and subsidiary of MEMC Electronic Materials, Inc., today announced the completion of the first phase of an innovative solar project on the Narmada Canal in Gujarat, India. The announcement was made today at an inauguration ceremony attended by Shri Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat State, and Pashupathy Gopalan, Managing Director, South Asia and Sub-Saharan Operations, SunEdison. The 1 megawatt (MW) power plant located in Sanad, a town in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is part of a cutting-edge project that will deliver clean solar energy while helping the region reduce water loss associated with evaporation.
Phase one of the solar project was developed for Gujarat State Electricity Corporation (GSECL) and is comprised of more than 3,600 MEMC polycrystalline solar modules and four grid-tied central inverters. The solar power plant is expected to generate approximately 1.5 million kilowatt hours of solar energy annually. The installation is also expected to help the region’s water resources by reducing water lost through evaporation. It is estimated that this first phase, of a potential three phase project, will save close to 70 lakh litres or 7 million liters of water annually.
