Sumitomo Rubber Thailand Takes Leap Towards Utilization of Carbon-Free Electric Power

Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. is declaring that tyre manufacturing and sales division in Thailand, Sumitomo Rubber (Thailand) Co., Ltd., is in the procedure of setting up the world’s largest rooftop solar panel network for a single facility, additionally, a gas cogeneration system and will also start obtaining green electric power distributed by Kansai Energy Solutions (Thailand) Co. Ltd. (K-EST), which is a subordinate division of Kansai Electric Power Co. Inc. (KEPCO).

A huge rooftop solar panel network and a gas cogeneration system is being set up at Sumitomo Rubber Thailand’s tyre manufacturing and sales amenity in the Rayong Province to provide the site to execute sustainable power.

With the assistance of Ministry of the Environment as part of their “2022 Financing Program for Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM)*2 Model Projects,” K-EST will be setting a rooftop solar panel network grid (about 40,000 panels with an overall output of approximately 22MW) likewise a gas cogeneration system (two 6.6MW boilers) at Sumitomo Rubber Thailand’s Factory in Rayong Province.

The comprehensiveness of electric power and steam produced by the two systems will be used to distribute the production facility, restoring the currently used energy sources. In the end, Sumitomo assesses the factory’s overall annual CO2 emissions will be minimized by 38,000 tonnes.

Additionally, fitting new equipment, Sumitomo Rubber Thailand also inked an agreement with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) for the facility of renewable energy certificates.

As the International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC) suggests the renewable energy properties of biomass electric power –created by combustion of excessive branches, trunks and other remaining from rubber trees that are accumulated for lumber in Thailand – the project will also contribute to the company’s sustainable natural rubber efforts.
