Sterlite Copper, a unit of Vedanta Ltd., an Indian copper producer, has launched LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) vehicles in partnership with Green Line Mobility Solutions. This pilot project is part of the company's mission to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, aligning with its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals.
The vehicles was launched at the flag-off event held at Vedanta’s Copper Plant in Silvassa. As per the firm, the LNG vehicles will replace traditional diesel trucks for transporting finished goods to the North Zone in a reverse logistics model. LNG trucks emit 90 percent less particulate matter and have significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions. The transition has already reduced 2.10 tons of CO2 equivalent emissions in fiscal year 2025.
Puneet Khurana, CEO, Copper and Nickel Business, Vedanta Ltd., said, “We are proud to be partnering with Green Line and working together towards building a greener and cleaner future. This initiative is a significant milestone in our journey towards carbon neutrality. At Sterlite Copper, we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and promoting sustainable practices across our operations.”
"These vehicles are equipped with 24x7 GPS tracking and smart cameras for safety and driver fatigue monitoring. The initiative falls under Sterlite’s ESG sub-brand, 'Sterlite Cares,' focusing on people, planet, and possibilities," said the note.
Vedanta Limited, Sterlite Copper's parent company, has pledged USD 5 billion to reduce carbon emissions by 2050, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility through various initiatives, including its flagship program, Nand Ghars.
