SSE Pacifico, the joint venture between British energy giant SSE and local energy developer Pacifico Energy, has revealed plans to construct 6 GW of offshore wind capacity in Japan.

This initiative aligns with Japan's vision to emerge as a leading player in the global wind power arena and highlights the key role of offshore wind in the nation's decarbonization efforts.

Japan's government has set forth aggressive targets to ramp up offshore wind production, aiming for 10 GW of capacity by 2030 and a staggering 45 GW by 2040.

SSE Pacifico President Dai Karasawa affirmed the company's commitment to realizing this vision. However, specific timelines and cost estimates for the endeavor were not disclosed. Karasawa outlined a strategic roadmap for project implementation, emphasizing a phased approach to auction one project per year through state auctions.

Established in 2021, SSE Pacifico represents a partnership between SSE Renewables, holding an 80 percent stake, and Pacifico Energy, renowned for its track record in solar power generation, having produced 1.3 GW since 2012.
