Solar Powered Boats Soon to Launch in Chilika Lake

To commission the boat services in waterways as per the State government plans to begin solar powered boats on experimental basis in Chilika lake soon.

An official of the Commerce and Transport Department announced that there are government plans to substitute the mechanised boats in rivers, lakes, sea and water bodies with solar powered boats for carrying the passengers and goods as well.

The solar powered boats will be soon started on pilot basis in Chilika lake for 3 months.

If the project will become successful, then it is anticipated to cut down the transport cost of mechanised boats by INR 7 lakh annually.

The new regulations are intended for transforming cargo functioning through waterways and providing a boost to tourism.

Furthermore, solar-powered electric boats will be started in Chilika Lake to ferry tourists.

The State government targets to conserve 69 tonnes of CO2 emissions average per year.

Notably, Solar boats have a very low operational cost in contrast to petrol-fuelled boats.

Solar boats are environment-friendly, and they do not give any harmful effects on the climate. It will assist minimise pollution in Chilika Lake.

However, the plans are to deploy solar powered boats to other water bodies, if it will be successful.
