India is steadily expanding its renewable energy capacity, strengthening its power sector with continuous additions in solar, wind, and hydro projects.
As of December 31, 2024, according to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), India’s total installed renewable energy capacity stands at 209,444.75 MW. This includes significant contributions from various sources such as wind power (48,163.16 MW), solar power (97,864.72 MW), and bio-power (11,348.15 MW). Small hydropower adds another 5,100.55 MW.
Among the States, Rajasthan leads in solar power capacity with 26,489.65 MW, while Tamil Nadu and Gujarat follow closely with 9,518.37 MW and 16,795.77 MW, respectively. In terms of wind power, Tamil Nadu holds the highest capacity at 11,409.04 MW, followed by Gujarat with 12,473.78 MW and Karnataka with 6,731.30 MW.
Bio-power is a key contributor in States like Maharashtra (2,984.05 MW) and Karnataka (1,909.95 MW). Additionally, waste-to-energy projects collectively contribute 921.79 MW to the national grid.
India’s renewable energy expansion is driven by various initiatives, including the PM-Surya Ghar Yojna (solar rooftop installations) and KUSUM (off-grid solar and agricultural solar pumps), with States like Gujarat and Rajasthan making significant progress in solar hybrid and off-grid installations.
This growing capacity exhibits India’s commitment to achieving its renewable energy targets and transitioning towards a sustainable energy future.
