Singapore and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have announced the establishment of an IEA Regional Cooperation Centre in Singapore. This marks the IEA’s first office outside of its headquarters in Paris, France. The announcement was made during the IEA’s 50th Anniversary Ministerial in Paris.

The IEA Regional Cooperation Centre will serve as a hub for the IEA’s activities in Southeast Asia and beyond, offering policy guidance, technical assistance, and training. It will focus on scaling up the deployment of renewables and clean energy technologies, promoting cross-border power trade, and facilitating access to finance for clean energy investments. Operations are set to begin in the second half of 2024.

Second Minister for Trade and Industry Dr. Tan See Leng expressed optimism about the Centre's role, stating, “The IEA Regional Cooperation Centre in Singapore will deepen our partnership with the IEA. It will energize the region’s decarbonization journey while continuing to provide advice on energy security and resilience.”

IEA Executive Director Dr. Fatih Birol highlighted the significance of the new office, stating, “This new office will allow us to significantly increase the IEA’s engagement with Southeast Asia, one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing regions in the world, critical to the energy transition.”

Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore, Ngiam Shih Chun emphasized the Centre's importance in strengthening cooperation, stating, “The establishment of the Centre marks another significant milestone in our cooperation with the IEA.”

The IEA, established in 1974, coordinates response measures to oil supply emergencies and has expanded its activities to include analysis, data, policy recommendations, and solutions for secure and sustainable energy. Since Singapore joined the IEA as an Association country in 2016, both sides have strengthened collaboration to support energy transition efforts in Southeast Asia.
