Sekisui Chemical to Set Up 100 MW Perovskite Solar Cells Facility in Japan

Japan-based Sekisui Chemical has unveiled plans to begin mass production of lightweight and flexible perovskite solar cells, with commercialisation targeted for 2025. The company is also establishing a 100 MW facility to be operationalised by 2027 and will continue to invest in the construction of a GW-level production line by 2030.

Japan-based plastics manufacturer Sekisui Chemical has announced its decision to commence mass production of lightweight and flexible perovskite solar cells, marking a significant step in advancing renewable energy technology. The decision, finalised during a recent board meeting, aligns with the company’s goal of commercialising this innovative technology by 2025.

Sekisui Chemical has been developing and refining mass-production technologies for perovskite solar cells under Japan’s Green Innovation Fund. While the company achieved a level of technological readiness to initiate production at existing facilities in 2025, challenges such as scaling up production capacity and reducing costs remained.

The company’s efforts received a significant boost when it was selected for the GX Supply Chain Construction Support Project by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

“The company would like to play a central role in realising the government's goal of establishing a GW level supply system by 2030 and has therefore decided to make a capital investment with the aim of starting operation of a 100 MW manufacturing line in 2027,” informed the company in a statement.

It further added that the company will continue to invest in the construction of a GW-level production line by 2030, with an eye toward overseas expansion, as it continues to capture demand and gradually increase its investment.

As part of this initiative, the company will repurpose buildings and infrastructure at Sharp Corporation’s main factory in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture. This includes power supply and cooling facilities. A new subsidiary, Sekisui Solar Film, will be established to manage the design, manufacturing, and sales of perovskite solar cells.

The new company will initially target low load-bearing roofs and public-sector facilities such as gymnasiums that serve as disaster evacuation centres. The lightweight and flexible properties of perovskite solar cells make them ideal for these applications.

“It will then aim to expand the business by reducing costs through mass production and creating demand by targeting roofs and exterior walls of private-sector buildings such as factories and warehouses,” it said.

For this, Sekisui Chemical and Sharp Corporation have entered a basic agreement regarding the acquisition of Sharp’s building facilities. Additionally, Sekisui Chemical has partnered with the Development Bank of Japan Inc., signing a shareholders agreement to jointly operate the new company.
