The Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones, known as Modon, has signed an agreement with Desert Technologies, a prominent player in renewable energy and Saudi Arabia’s first solar panel manufacturer and exporter, to establish a massive industrial complex in Jeddah’s third industrial city.

This landmark project aims to localise solar manufacturing, strengthen the renewable energy supply chain, and support Saudi Arabia's ambitious energy mix targets.

The new facility, covering 170,000 square meters of land provided by Modon, will produce both solar panels and cells with an impressive annual production capacity of up to five gigawatts (GW). The SAR 750 million investment will make it one of the largest photovoltaic manufacturing sites in Saudi Arabia, reinforcing the Kingdom’s commitment to becoming a leader in the renewable energy sector.

This expansive complex will host state-of-the-art production lines with a capacity to manufacture two GW of solar panels and three GW of solar cells, positioning it as a critical component of the Kingdom’s industrial landscape. The initiative by Desert Technologies aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals to diversify the national energy portfolio. With the intention of having renewables contribute around 50 percent of the electricity generation mix, the project will play a pivotal role in meeting these objectives.

By enhancing local production capacity, it is also set to contribute to the broader localisation of solar manufacturing, which has been identified as a priority in the national renewable energy strategy.

This ambitious project is expected to not only bolster the nation’s renewable energy infrastructure but also create jobs, foster technical expertise, and attract further investments in the sector.
