In a significant step toward promoting clean energy and sustainable farming, Saudi Arabia's Forward7 Initiative has partnered with Sistema.bio, a global social enterprise specialising in biogas technology, to install 800 subsidised biodigesters for smallholder farmers in Nepal and Indonesia.
The project is scheduled for completion by January 2025 and is expected to make a lasting impact by providing renewable energy solutions to rural communities.
Forward7, formerly known as the Clean Fuel Solutions for Cooking, has collaborated with key implementation partners including PT. Biru Karbon Nusantara (BKN) in Indonesia and the Nepal Biogas Promotion Association to ensure the effective rollout of the biodigesters. The initiative is backed by the Middle East Green Initiative and is part of Saudi Arabia's broader efforts to support sustainable development across the region.
The project aims to install biogas units ranging from 2 cubic meters to 40 cubic meters in key agricultural areas. These biodigesters will allow smallholder farmers to convert organic waste into clean, renewable energy, significantly reducing their dependence on traditional cooking fuels such as wood and coal. Additionally, the initiative will help improve waste management by generating biofertiliser as a by-product, offering farmers a cost-effective and organic alternative to chemical fertilisers.
This initiative is not only focused on environmental benefits but also aims to improve the livelihoods of rural communities by reducing energy costs, improving health conditions, and empowering women. By providing clean cooking solutions, Forward7 seeks to mitigate the harmful effects of traditional cooking methods and reduce carbon emissions.
A comprehensive project management strategy has been implemented to address potential challenges, including import delays, installation quality control, and ensuring the technology is accessible and affordable for end users. Regular audits and bi-weekly updates will ensure the project remains on track, with advanced data collection tools like Salesforce and TaroWorks being used to monitor progress.
Launched in 2021 as part of the Middle East Green Initiative, Forward7 is committed to providing clean cooking solutions to millions of people across rural areas, working to meet Sustainable Development Goal 7 by ensuring access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for all.
By the project's completion, Forward7 and Sistema.bio hope to create a long-term presence in Nepal and Indonesia, supporting smallholder farmers with sustainable energy solutions that improve quality of life, stimulate economic growth, and contribute to climate change mitigation.
