Rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana are expected to reach 20 lakh by October 2025, said Minister of State of Power, and New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Naik at DISCOM Conclave 2025, organised by PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), in New Delhi.
While speaking at the event, he stated that around 10 lakh installations are projected by March, doubling to 20 lakh by October, 40 lakh by March 2026, and ultimately achieving the target of one crore by March 2027.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 15, 2024, with an outlay of INR 75,021 crore, the scheme aims to provide free electricity by enabling rooftop solar installations for one crore households. Discoms serve as state implementation agencies, ensuring net meter availability, timely inspection, and commissioning of installations.
The scheme allocates INR 4,950 crore under the ‘Incentives to DISCOMs’ component, replacing the earlier Grid Connected Roof Top Solar (GCRT) Phase II program.
As of November 2024, a total of 1.45 crore registrations, 26.38 lakh applications, and 6.34 lakh rooftop solar installations had been recorded on the national portal, Naik said in the Rajya Sabha in December 2024.
He stated that Gujarat leads the nation with 2,86,545 installations, followed by Maharashtra with 1,26,344 and Kerala with 52,693. “Other states like Uttar Pradesh (53,423), Tamil Nadu (20,151), and Rajasthan (18,697) have also contributed significantly, though some regions, such as Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Nagaland, reported minimal progress,” he said.
