Qatar has embarked on the construction of the world’s largest blue ammonia production plant, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to lead the global energy transition.

The foundation stone for the groundbreaking project was laid in Mesaieed, an industrial city in Qatar, in the presence of the nation’s Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The ambitious plant is part of Qatar Energy’s broader strategy to bolster its position as a key player in sustainable energy production.

The Mesaieed facility, once completed, will have the capacity to produce 1.2 million tons of ammonia annually, making it the largest blue ammonia production plant in the world. Additionally, the plant will feature a CO2 storage unit capable of storing 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, further supporting Qatar’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. The project will also be powered by a 35 MW solar power plant, showcasing Qatar’s dedication to integrating renewable energy into its industrial infrastructure.

Blue ammonia is produced using natural gas and coal in combination with carbon capture technologies, significantly reducing carbon emissions compared to conventional ammonia production methods. This makes blue ammonia an environmentally friendlier alternative to traditional fossil fuels and a promising 'green' fuel source.
