The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation 'Kahramaa' has unveiled the Qatar National Renewable Energy Strategy (QNRES).

This strategy, developed in coordination with 22 key energy actors in Qatar, marks a key step in the nation's journey towards a more sustainable future in alignment with the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third Qatar National Development Strategy 2024-2030.

Renewable energy is gaining traction as a competitive alternative to traditional hydrocarbon-based power plants in Qatar, aligning with the nation's objectives outlined in the 2nd National Development Strategy (NDS).

A recent comprehensive analysis, facilitated by a least-cost simulation engine tailored for the QNRES, has underlined the necessity for Qatar to target a utility-scale renewable energy capacity of approximately 4 GW by 2030, with a primary emphasis on solar photovoltaic (PV) technology. This target seeks to elevate renewable energy's contribution to Qatar's power mix from its current 5 percent to a substantial 18 percent by 2030.

Additionally, the strategy recommends the installation of a distributed solar generation capacity of around 200 MW by the same year, aiming to reduce strain on centralized grid infrastructure while enhancing energy resilience.

The launch of QNRES highlights Qatar's commitment to environmental sustainability and energy security. By reducing CO2 emissions and promoting sustainable energy policies, the strategy aims to reduce Qatar's total annual CO2 emissions from the power sector by 10 percent. Furthermore, it targets a 27 percent reduction in the annual CO2 intensity for each unit of electricity produced.

Economically, QNRES is expected to drive down the average cost of electricity generation by 15 percent by 2030 through cost-competitive renewable energy solutions. Diversifying generation sources will enhance energy security and stability in the sector, ensuring reliability and resilience in the electricity system.

Kahramaa plays a central role in the implementation of QNRES, with responsibilities including regulatory oversight, program execution, stakeholder management, and support for research and innovation initiatives. The corporation has announced the start of receiving applications for accredited solar panels and inverters from distributors and manufacturers, laying the groundwork for the distributed renewable energy program.
