Prashant Kumar Singh Appointed as New Secretary of MNRE

Prashant Kumar Singh succeeds Bhupinder S. Bhalla as Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, bringing extensive experience to the role amid India's growing commitment to renewable energy initiatives.

In a significant development for India’s renewable energy sector, Prashant Kumar Singh has officially taken on the role of Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), effective October 1, 2024.

His appointment was announced during a ceremony that celebrated the achievements of the outgoing Secretary, Bhupinder S. Bhalla, who was commended for his significant contributions to the industry. Under Bhalla’s stewardship, the country made substantial strides in renewable energy initiatives, earning recognition and appreciation from various stakeholders in the sector.

Singh is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1993 batch from the Manipur cadre, bringing a wealth of experience to his new position. Prior to this role, he served as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the MNRE for the past six weeks. His extensive background includes notable positions such as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), as well as key roles in different government departments, including Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Steel and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Singh holds a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi and has been awarded a gold medal for his master’s degree in Public Policy and Sustainable Development from TERI University. This diverse academic and professional background is expected to play a crucial role in advancing India’s renewable energy objectives.
