Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, where he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for multiple developmental projects totaling approximately INR 17,300 crore in Thoothukudi.
Among the key highlights of this visit is the inauguration of India's first indigenous green hydrogen fuel cell inland waterway vessel, marking a significant milestone in the nation's pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.
Under the Harit Nauka initiative, the vessel, manufactured by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), represents a groundbreaking leap towards embracing clean energy alternatives and aligning with India's ambitious net-zero commitments.
With an estimated cost of INR 17.5 crore, the vessel's development underscores a concerted effort to integrate green hydrogen technology into the country's transportation sector.
Notably, the Ministry of Shipping has provided substantial funding, covering 75 percent of the vessel's total cost, signaling strong governmental support for innovative eco-friendly initiatives. Originally scheduled for delivery by March-April, CSL remains at the forefront of this technological advancement, with the hydrogen fuel cell technology being developed domestically and supplied by a Pune-based firm.
