Oxford PV Introduces 20 Percent More Powerful Tandem Solar Panels

UK based firm Oxford PV has launched the world’s first 20 percent more efficient tandem solar panels. These 72-cell panels, with the module efficiency of 24.5 percent, reduce costs and enhance land use.

Oxford PV, a UK  based firm known for its innovative work in perovskite-on-silicon tandem solar cells, has made a significant breakthrough in the solar energy sector by announcing the world’s first commercial sale of its cutting-edge tandem solar panels, which deliver 20 percent more energy than conventional silicon panels.

The 72-cell panels, incorporating Oxford PV's proprietary perovskite on silicon solar cells, will be installed in a utility-scale project for an undisclosed U.S. customer. With a remarkable module efficiency of 24.5 percent, these panels are designed to lower the levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) while maximising power generation from the same land area.

David Ward, CEO of Oxford PV, emphasised the impact of this development, stating, “The commercialisation of this technology is a breakthrough for the energy industry. With more electricity generation from the same area, perovskite technology is now helping utilities speed up the transition to renewable energy by offering more energy at a lower cost."

This deal marks the first-ever commercial deployment of a perovskite tandem solar panel globally. Earlier in June, Oxford PV set a world record with a solar panel efficiency of 26.9 percent. Headquartered in Yarnton, England, the company produces its high-efficiency tandem solar cells at its factory in Brandenburg an der Havel, Germany, where it has been refining the technology since 2014.

As per the firm's note, Oxford PV will be focussing on scaling up production to a gigawatt level at a future high-volume manufacturing facility.
