NETRA, the R&D wing of state-owned NTPC, has announced that it is setting up a 1 tonne per day (TPD) seawater-to-green hydrogen plant at NTPC Simhadri near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
For seawater processing, NTPC has implemented an innovative, low-carbon desalination plant utilizing waste heat from the thermal power plant flue gas, enabling low cost conversion of seawater into hydrogen-grade water.
With 12-13 kg of purified water required to produce 1 kg of hydrogen, and given the scarcity of water, the government is prioritising development and deployment technologies that would enable hydrogen production from low-grade water sources like seawater and wastewater.
NTPC’s initiative aligns with this strategy, enhancing resource efficiency in hydrogen production. The project is being executed by NTPC Green Energy Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC, as part of its efforts to achieve the National Green Hydrogen Mission targets.
