In a strategic move to bolster clean energy ties with Africa, NTPC and the International Solar Alliance (ISA) are set to sign tripartite agreements with seven African countries for the development of large-scale solar power projects.
The total planned capacity across these initiatives exceeds 1,530 MW. Among the projects, a 30 MW floating solar installation is proposed in Mauritius, while ground-mounted solar projects include 800 MW in Guinea, 400 MW in Ethiopia, 100 MW each in Malawi and Zambia, and 50 MW each in Mali and Niger.
As per reports, NTPC will act as the project management consultant and will undertake feasibility studies for all seven nations. The power major will also be responsible for designing the bidding process to select developers for each project.
While negotiations with Ethiopia and Guinea are progressing positively, NTPC is expected to tailor business models to raise awareness and encourage wider participation in solar adoption across these countries.
ISA has highlighted Africa’s growing dependence on Indian solar module imports, alongside a rising presence of Indian power developers in the continent’s renewable energy sector. Although China remains the world’s leading supplier of solar equipment, India’s exports of solar modules are gaining ground, with ISA advocating for diversified sourcing to mitigate global supply chain risks.
This collaborative effort underscores India’s expanding role in global clean energy partnerships and aligns with ISA’s mission to promote solar power deployment in the Global South.
