Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NTPC for the feasibility study of the floating power plant.

The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Ltd. will commence a feasibility study for a 130 MW floating solar power plant on Dumbur Lake in Tripura's Gomati district.

Through the study, the NTPC will observe and explore the area of the waterbodies needed to be assumed for the plant, recognition of local transfer stations, and forest clearance for installing the first renewable energy plant in the state.

The planned project 130 MW floating power plant is necessary for the state's objective of generating 200 MW of solar energy by the year 2030.

The state's average solar power energy capacity is at 2080 MW. TREDA has also initiated a process to facilitate solar energy to the interior tribal habitations where conventional power supply is not profitable.

The benefit of a floating solar power plant is less land use, mainly related to evacuation arrangements. Apart from, the availability of floating solar panels, the evaporation rate from water bodies is minimised, thus assisting in water conservation.
