NTPC Green Energy Ltd. (NGEL) and Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Co. Ltd. (CSPGCL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop up to 2000 MW renewable energy projects including floating solar.
The MoU was exchanged in Raipur between Chief Engineer (CP and BD), CSPGCL, G.K. Gupta and General Manager (Engineering), NGEL, D. Joshi. The ceremony was attended by S.K. Katiyar, Managing Director, CSPGCL, P.K. Mishra, Regional Executive Director (WR-II), NTPC, and other dignitaries from NGEL, NTPC, and CSPGCL.
Recently, NGEL formed a 50:50 joint venture with ONGC Green Ltd. to develop renewable energy projects, including offshore wind, storage, and ESG-compliant initiatives. “ONGPL will be engaged in the business of exploring and setting up Renewable Energy (RE) projects and assets both through Greenfield development and acquisitions. ONGPL will also assess the feasibility and establishment of offshore wind projects, among other related activities,” informed the company earlier.
NGEL’s renewable energy portfolio encompasses solar and wind power assets with presence across multiple locations in more than six states which helps the company mitigate the risk of location-specific generation variability.
The company’s operational capacity was 3,071 MW of solar projects and 100 MW of wind projects across six states as of August 31, 2024. Further, the NTPC group intends to reach 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032. It has an installed capacity of 3.5 GW and over 28 GW in progress.
Further, the company is venturing into newer avenues to diversify its RE portfolio. NGEL is setting up a Green Hydrogen Hub at Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh for which PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to lay the foundation stone on November 29, 2024.
With an approximate investment of INR 1,85,000 crore, the hub will produce 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen daily, along with 4,500 tonnes of green ammonia, 1,500 tonnes of green methanol, and 1,500 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) or green urea, making it one of the largest such facilities in the world.
These projects are expected to support India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and will contribute to national carbon reduction goals.
