NISE, NLDC Partner to Develop Next-Gen Hybrid Solar Forecasting System

National Institute of Solar Energy and National Load Despatch Centre have signed an MoU to develop a next-generation hybrid solar forecasting framework, integrating numerical weather prediction, satellite data, and real-time All-Sky Imager-based nowcasting to generate high-frequency probabilistic forecasts (P50/P90) from a few minutes up to 48 hours.

The National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) and National Load Despatch Centre (NLDC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly undertake a research project on ‘Hybrid Day-Ahead and Intra-Day Solar Forecasting for Large Solar Parks in India’.

The initiative is aimed at building indigenous, data-driven, and future-ready capabilities for large-scale renewable energy integration in India.

Under the project, a hybrid forecasting framework will be developed by integrating numerical weather prediction models, satellite data, and real-time All-Sky Imager-based nowcasting. The system will generate high-frequency probabilistic forecasts (P50/P90) ranging from a few minutes to 48 hours, enabling more accurate short-term power predictions.

“This will significantly enhance short-term predictability, reduce Deviation Settlement Mechanism (DSM) risks, and improve scheduling reliability for both developers and system operators,” stated NISE.

The MoU was formally signed by Prof. Mohammad Rihan, Director General, NISE, and Manoj Kumar Agrawal, Executive Director, NLDC, in the presence of Samir Chandra Saxena, CMD, GRID-India.

The collaborative initiative will be implemented in partnership with leading renewable energy developers such as Adani Green Energy, NTPC Green Energy, Tata Power Renewable Energy, ReNew, and Serentica Renewables, stated NISE. These developers will provide access to large utility-scale solar parks for real-time deployment and validation of the forecasting system, it said.
