National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Ltd., has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) to attract global players for the development of the country’s inaugural offshore wind energy plant.
This initiative aligns with NHPC’s ambitious plan to contribute over 27 GW of renewable energy projects by 2030, in line with India’s 2030 climate goals.
India has committed to achieving 500 GW of cumulative electric power installed capacity through non-fossil fuel-based sources by 2030, as per its revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
NHPC’s move to explore offshore wind power projects is part of the government's larger strategy to invite bids for 50 GW of renewable energy capacity annually for the next five years.
NHPC, currently ranked among the top 10 global companies with an investment base of INR 74,715.12 crore, aims to collaborate with companies possessing extensive experience in offshore wind power project development globally.
With a total installed capacity of 7097.2 MW, NHPC generates nearly 25,000 million units of electricity annually through its hydro and renewable energy-based power plants.
India's coastline of 7500 km presents a significant opportunity for offshore wind energy, and NHPC's EoI signals a strategic move to tap into this potential.
