New prizes DONG Energy Solar Challenge
With just a couple more weeks to go to the first starting shot of the DONG Energy Solar Challenge, a few new elements are added to this ‘World Cup for Solar Powered Boats’. The fourty participants from nine countries can win a new Design Award.

The last couple of years we have seen the development of the design increase and we want to stimulate that with this price’, according chairman Siem Jansen.
With the Fairplay Award the lucky one wins a traineeship on board of a tallship. This participant will sail with the crew and other young adults over different European seas for several months. With this the collaboration between the DONG Energy Solar Challenge and Harlingen Sail 2014 is sealed. Harlingen Sail also sets prizes available during the sprint competitions of the solar boats on Sunday 8 July in Leeuwarden.
Another new element is the addition of the Frisian E-performance Challenge. Fifteen electrical boats of diverse shipyards from the Netherlands, sail simultaneously, their own eleven cities route. The aim of participating in the Challenge is announcing to a big public that electrical powered boats perform good’, says Anton Schiere, secretary of the SEFF, the foundation that promotes electrical boating in Friesland.
The challenge will be fully in the media, on RTL7 and Omrop Fryslân. Next to that there is an own Solar LiveTV-team, which will keep the home front of the participants up to date by live images and reports. Participating teams, especially from colleges and universities from around the world, will follow the DONG Energy Solar Challenge on their own schools on big screens in the school cafeteria.
