Nepal PM Triggers Final Blast for Arun-3 Hydro Project's Head Race Tunnel

This project is being executed by SJVN Arun-3 Power Development Company Pvt. Ltd. (SAPDC), a fully owned subsidiary of SJVN.

Prime Minister of Nepal, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ triggered the last blast to complete the heading excavation of the 11.8 km long Head Race Tunnel for the 900 MW Arun-3 Hydro Electric Project in the Sankhuwasabha District. 

This project is being executed by SJVN Arun-3 Power Development Company Pvt. Ltd. (SAPDC), a fully owned subsidiary of SJVN. The collaboration between SJVN and the Government of Nepal aims to enhance regional energy security and boost economic development through sustainable hydropower generation in the Arun River Basin.

The tunnel breakthrough ceremony was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Nepal’s Minister of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Shakti Bahadur Basnet; Health Minister of Province 1 Rajender Karki; India’s Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava; Chairperson and Managing Director of SJVN Sushil Sharma; CEO of the Investment Board of Nepal Sushil Bhatta; CEO of SAPDC Arun Dhiman; Executive Director of SJVN Rakesh Sehgal, along with other officials from the Government of Nepal and local authorities.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Prachanda highlighted the importance of the breakthrough in achieving the goal of providing clean, renewable energy and contributing to the sustainable development of the region. He commended the ongoing efforts and reaffirmed the Government of Nepal's commitment to the timely completion of the Arun-3 Hydro Electric Project.

India’s Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, recalled the agreement between the Prime Ministers of India and Nepal last year to establish a long-term power trade agreement for importing electricity from Nepal. He emphasized that the completion of the 900 MW Arun-3 Hydro Electric Project, aimed at exporting power, is a significant milestone in this bilateral endeavor.

SJVN’s CMD, Sushil Sharma, informed the Prime Minister of Nepal that the successful breakthrough of the Head Race Tunnel is a milestone in the construction of the Arun-3 Hydro Electric Project. He highlighted that over 74 percent of the project works have been completed and assured that the remaining works are progressing rapidly. The project is expected to start generating electricity by next year, with an annual potential of 3,924 million units.

Sharma expressed gratitude for the support from the Government of Nepal, local authorities, and the community. He stated, "This project symbolizes the strong partnership between India and Nepal in the energy sector and our collective efforts to achieve energy security and environmental sustainability."

During his visit to Nepal, Sharma also met with Chief Secretary Dr. Baikuntha Aryal and Home Secretary Shri Eaknarayan Aryal to discuss various issues related to the development of hydroelectric projects in the Arun Valley. Currently, SJVN is executing three Hydroelectric Projects with a combined capacity of 2,200 MW in the Arun River basin in Nepal.
