In response to the November 3 earthquake that struck Jajarkot and Rukum West districts, causing significant devastation, the Nepal government unveiled plans to provide renewable energy solutions, particularly focusing on solar photovoltaic systems, for the affected victims.
The earthquake resulted in 154 fatalities, 346 injuries, and extensive damage to over 26,500 houses.
Speaking at a workshop organized by the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC), Energy, Irrigation, and Water Resources Minister Shakti Basnet outlined the government's commitment to implementing renewable energy solutions to aid those affected by the earthquake.
AEPC, a government body dedicated to promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy in Nepal, hosted the event.
The workshop celebrated the successful installation of approximately 1,400 solar photovoltaic systems in Nepal, funded by the German government and KFW Bank, Germany.
Under a three-year assistance program, 1,383 institutional solar photovoltaic systems were implemented, and 90 rural solar drinking water projects were completed with a EUR 5.7 million contribution from Germany. The Nepal government contributed around EUR 1.4 million, while the local community contributed approximately 4.6 million Euros.
AEPC Executive Director Navaraj Dhakal highlighted the success of the organization in promoting renewable energy technologies and addressing energy poverty in Nepal, emphasizing the positive impact of solar solutions in remote areas.
